Children‘s playground on the promenade at Playa Norte. Main entrance of the Acuasol Aparthotel, with more than 600 beds, one of the largest hotels in Peñiscola. Christiano is a pensioner. He currently lives near Madrid, but visits his vacation home in Peñíscola as often as possible. I met him in the shadow of the old fortress, where he was fishing for octopus. The old bar at the bullring in Vinaros becomes a tourist attraction during the summer. In the winter, it is mainly the locals who meet there for a cold beer or a glass of wine. The old fortress in Peñíscola is now a famous tourist site after becoming a popular filming location. Uli arrived at Costa de Azahar almost by accident more than 20 years ago. He now lives in a small mountain village that he has renovated himself over the years. He doesn‘t notice much of the tourist crowds, only a few groups of visitors come to the restaurant in Bel. The housing complexes were built illegally in the hills years ago. They used to drive from Germany to Spain in a camper, but they now feel more comfortable staying at one of the many vacation homes. Sandra was born and raised in the neighboring town of Peñíscola, she works during the summer as a waitress. In winter it‘s always very hard for her to find a job. The emerging tourism in the 60s was to change the Spanish province Costa de Azahar significantly. The agricultural areas on the beach, which were rather useless at the time, increased in value and the center of life of the people has shifted. Farmers and fishermen became hoteliers, real estate agents and restaurateurs, who since then have been trying to fulfil the tourists‘ dream of a perfect summer holiday. Today the hotels and holiday resorts are an integral part of the landscape and attract several hundred thousand guests to the region in the name of the financially strongest industry of our time. For the locals this is both a blessing and a curse. The majority of the people live from tourism, which often means a 7-day week in the summer months. During this time they have to earn the entire annual income. However, unemployment rises over the winter, and almost all hotels and restaurants are closed during this time.
